Vaginal Dryness: What’s Causing It & How to Find Relief

By Danni Bichler, Clinical Naturopath & Nutritionist | Alivio Health

Vaginal dryness is more than just an annoying inconvenience. It can affect your confidence, comfort, intimacy and overall sense of wellbeing. Understanding the causes of vaginal dryness is the first step to finding real, lasting solutions.

What Is Vaginal Dryness?

Vaginal and vulval dryness can occur when the tissues of the vagina are not adequately lubricated, leading to symptoms such as itching, burning, discomfort during intercourse and general irritation. There are a number of different reasons that this could be happening, including:

1. Hormonal Changes

Oestrogen is crucial for maintaining the vaginal and vulval lining's moisture and elasticity. A decline in oestrogen levels—common during menopause, postpartum, or while breastfeeding—can result in thinner, less lubricated vaginal tissues. If you have a menstrual cycle, you may notice times of lower oestrogen in your cycle such as right after your period may exacerbate the vaginal dryness.

2. Chronic Infections

Recurrent infections, such as candidiasis (thrush), can disrupt the natural balance of the vaginal environment. The overgrowth of Candida can lead to inflammation and dryness, heightening discomfort. Other vaginal infections can also disrupt the healthy vaginal flora called Lactobacillus, which are partly responsible for helping to keep the vagina lubricated and moist.

3. Dermatological Conditions

Skin disorders like lichen sclerosus or eczema can affect the vulvar area, causing dryness, itching, and irritation.

4. Medications and Lifestyle Factors

Certain medications, including antihistamines and some antidepressants, can reduce vaginal lubrication. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, excessive stress and inadequate hydration can also contribute to dryness.

Naturopathic Tips to Support Vaginal Moisture from Within

Nutrition can make a powerful difference when it comes to supporting vaginal and vulval health. Here are some key foods to start incorporating into your diet:

● Healthy Fats

Incorporate more foods rich in essential fatty acids like avocados, flaxseeds, olive oil, and nuts. These nourish the mucosal lining of the vagina and support natural lubrication.

● Phytoestrogen-Rich Foods

If low oestrogen is part of the picture, foods like whole-food soy products, legumes and flaxseeds offer gentle hormonal support through plant-based compounds that mimic oestrogen in the body.

● Hydration

A simple, but crucial step is to stay well-hydrated to help your body maintain natural lubrication processes.

Topical Solutions for Moisturising

In addition to dietary adjustments, topical applications can provide immediate relief from vaginal dryness. Pinc Wellness offers an Intimate Oil specifically designed to nourish and soothe dry, irritated vulval skin. Apply a few drops to the intimate area as needed, allowing the natural ingredients to provide relief and nourishment. This oil is especially helpful post-shower, before bed, or any time dryness becomes noticeable. It also smells divine!

  • Jojoba oil – Deeply hydrating and skin-softening

  • Magnolia officinalis – Anti-inflammatory and soothing
